Scope and Contents This collection consists primarily of oral interviews and research papers relating to folk medicine. This material was collected by ETSU students of Anthony P. Cavender for his Appalachian Folk Medicine course. The interviews on food as medicine were done by students enrolled in his Nutritional Anthropology course. The other items in the collection (home remedy lists, booklets, brochures, etc.) were either collected by Cavender or given to him by individuals who knew of his long-standing...

The collection is divided into two series: Series 1 contains 122 surveys of methods of self-treatment and home remedies and Series 2 contains 87 audio-taped interviews of individuals from Hiltons, Virginia. Each audio tape has been given an FMSR (Folk Medicine Survey Record) number.
