This is an artificial collection of United States Civil War-related documents, including documents relating to the pensions of Civil War soldiers.
The papers are arranged into two series: Series 1, Papers of Frederick S. Heiskell, 1810-1882, and Series 2, Scrapbooks, c. 1789-1882.
The collection consists of recordings of interviews conducted by Gunter's students in connection with his courses on social geography. The interview subjects are primarily from East Tennessee and often discuss topics of regional interest such as music, farm life, coal mining, and foodways. The collection also includes dub sheets for the first eight tapes, partial transcripts of tapes 2, 5 and 6, and summaries of interviews.
The Jefferson Burleson Papers consist of a photocopy of Jefferson Burleson’s Civil War notebook. The notebook documents Burleson’s military service in the 8th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment of the Union Army up to the time of his discharge on September 7, 1865.
The collection is divided into four series: Series 1, Military and Political Records, 1866-1934; Series 2, Personal and Family Correspondence, 1861-1973; Series 3, Newsclippings and Memorabilia, 1875-1910; and Series 4, Family Photographs, c. 1862-1973.
The materials in the addition were added to Series 2, Series 3, and Series 4, while Series 5 was created for the Elinor Farina Papers.
The William Hopper Papers consists of a letter along with photocopies of genealogical materials and military papers related to Hopper's activities during and after the Civil War. The letter sent by Hopper, while stationed in Helena, Arkansas, to his wife in Iowa reflects the feeling of discontent that Hopper and his colleagues experienced during the Civil War. The letter addresses the issues of the war from the soldier's point of view.
The collection reflects aspects of William Sullivan's life, family history, and business 1864-1911. Sullivan's letter from a camp near Fredricksburg, Virginia in 1864 describes his attitude towards the Civil War in that year. Copies of pages from his 1879 ledger outline his police duties for that year and detail his genealogy. (Some copies are illegible.) His 1911 ledger lists accounts for the Mitchell Powers Company and reflects church and business construction for the year 1911.
The Nat T. Winston Papers consist of documents from, by, and about the Taylor and Winston families of East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. The papers include correspondence, land deeds, diplomas, receipts, and other memorabilia. There are two documents concerning enslaved people: A collateral bond and an agreement between Winston family members pertaining to property.
