Bethany Mackey Scrapbook

 Collection — Box: 1
Identifier: AppMs-0865

Scope and Contents

The Bethany Mackey Scrapbook documents some of the on- and off-campus activities of Bethany Mackey of Cleveland, Tennessee, a 1921 East Tennessee State Normal School (ETSNS) graduate. The scrapbook includes photographs of friends, family, teachers, travels, and campus buildings. Many of the photographs are identified, including a photograph of an African-American woman labeled "Aunt Lizzie, the maid 1918-1920." There are several images of an outing to Cranberry, North Carolina. ETSNS president Sidney Gilbreath and ETSNS dean D.S. Burleson inscribed her scrapbook as did many of her friends and classmates. She also included photographs of some of her high school teachers in Cleveland, Tennessee.

In addition to the scrapbook, the collection includes a folder containing fifteen unidentified photographs and a copy of the ETSNS graduating exercises program of May 31, 1921, all of which were found loose in the scrapbook.
