Scope and Contents

This collection contains eight handwritten letters from Charles Michael McKinney to Jerry Shuttle in Bluff City, Tennessee from October 23, 1966 until March 25, 1967. McKinney was a Private First Class in the Second Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment during the Vietnam War and these letters detail events and emotions he experienced while serving. They discuss his daily activities, the weather, the training he was receiving, the girls he knew, his various locations, and the pride in his battalion that accompanied his disgust of war.

Jerry Shuttle donated the letters on July 17, 2014, accession number 2014-039.

Processing Information

Kaley Holloway processed the collection in October 2014. With funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, project archivist Nick Shaner digitized the collection in February 2022.
