Mary Sue Carson Going Papers
Scope and Contents
The Mary Sue Carson Going collection consists primarily of genealogical and historical research files created by Going as part of research as a genealogist and local historian, along with research conducted by her mother, Sarah Crumley Carson (Mrs. John Ross Carson), and her sister, Cora Louise Carson. The collection documents family history and local history of various East Tennessee families and East Tennessee topics. Material includes notes, family charts, copies of deeds, wills, and other genealogical records, correspondence, newspaper clippings, miscellaneous publications, post cards, scrapbooks, and a small number of photographs. NOTE: Miscellaneous photographs found in folders have been removed and are housed in a folder in Small Photographic Collections Box 1.

Arrangement
The collection is arranged into two series, as follows: Series I Genealogy Files, 1926-1994 and undated, Boxes 1-13 and Series II, Subject Files, 1854-2002 and undated, Boxes 14-18.
Method of Acquisition
The Mary Sue Carson Going Collection was donated to the Archives of Appalachia by Betty Jane Hylton, Johnson City, Tenn., on behalf of the Watauga Association of Genealogist, on November 21, 2006. The collection had originally been donated to the association by Going's son, Don Going, Alexandria, Va.
Processing Information
Processing the collection was completed by Tena Toews and Ned Irwin in June 2011.
