Scope and Contents

These records span the period 1951 through 1979 and cover primarily the administration of George N. Dove, dean of the college from 1962 until 1979. Mack P. Davis (1962-1976) and Christopher L. Bramlett (1977-1979) served as vice-presidents for academic affairs while Burgin E. Dossett (1962-1968), Delos P. Culp (1968-1977), and Arthur H. DeRosier (1977-1979) served as presidents of the university during this period.

The records of the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences consist primarily of administrative records pertaining to the academic programs of the departments within the college; personnel matters including hiring, promotion and tenure; student enrollment; credit hours produced; and budgets for the college for the years from 1962 through 1979. Also included are blueprints of campus buildings; the minutes of university standing committees; including the Chairmen's Council; departmental annual reports; and annual reports to the Tennessee Higher Education Commission. Incoming correspondence with the vice president for academic affairs and copies of outgoing correspondence of the dean to various officials on and off campus are also included.

The addition to the collection contains materials which document the functioning of the dean's office. Included are office files, faculty load reports, and reports on hiring of graduate assistants. The records cover the period from 1974-1984.

Materials restricted in accordance with the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 and the Tennessee Code, Section 10-7-504 have been pulled from the collection and may not be used by patrons.

Arrangement

The records are divided into four series: Series 1, General Office Files; Series 2, Chairmen's Council Minutes; Series 3, Professional Load Reports; and Series 4, Graduate Assistant Files. In Series 1 the files for the 1972-1973 academic year are missing, and in Series 3 reports for 1971-1972 are missing.

Method of Acquisition

The Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Records were transferred to the University Archives on July 26, 1983. The transferal was approved by Earl Wade, acting Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. The records were opened for research in May 1985.

Accruals and Additions

The addition to the records of the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Records was transferred to the University Archives by the dean's office in July 1985. Processing of the records was completed in 1996.
