Congregation B'nai Sholom Records
Scope and Contents
The B'nai Sholom Congregation Records consists of administrative records; correspondence; financial records; and publications of the congregation and its auxiliaries. The collection is comprised of material dating from 1905-1983, but the bulk of the material falls between 1945 and 1965.
Gaps in the collection include the following:
- There are no minutes prior to 1942 and after 1966
- There is no correspondence prior to 1927; from 1930-43; or from 1944-46. Little exists after 1961
- There is no correspondence from the following presidents:
- Adolph Lipman, 1944-47
- Tom Green, 1947-49
- Albert Roughbart, 1949-51
- Werner Litchenfels, 1952-54
- Jack Martin, 1954-55
- There is very little correspondence from the following presidents:
- Bernard Cantor, 1951-59
- Bernard Feinbery, 1961-62
- There is no correspondence from these rabbis:
- Bernard Stein, 1962-65
- Leonard Kaplan, 1966-67
- Israel Duchon, 1969-70
- There are no financial records prior to 1946 or since 1961
- The B'nai Sholom Community Monthly "Bulletin" prior to 1946 and from 1966-80 is absent
- For the B'nai Sholom Religious School there is no correspondence or financial records after 1970
- For the Joseph Strauss Lodge, B'nai Brith #1480, there is no correspondence prior to 1948, from 1952-58, after 1958; no fiinancial records prior to 1948 or after 1958; no minutes prior to 1960 or after 1964
- For the B'nai Sholom Sisterhood, there is no correspondence prior to 1961 or after 1977; no financial records 1927-1960 or after 1977; no minutes prior to 1962 or after 1979

The records are divided into five series: Series 1, Congregation Records (including Religious School); Series 2, Joseph Strauss Lodge Records; Series 3, B'nai Sholom Sisterhood Records; Series 4, Publications; and Series 5, Blueprints
Method of Acquisition
The records of the B'nai Sholom Congregation of Blountville, Tennessee were placed in the Archives of Appalachia on August 24, 1980 by Basil Saffer, the congregation's president for 1980-81.
