Scope and Contents

The Barbara McDermitt Collection includes 28 audiocassette field trip tapes of storytellers telling stories; 14 photographs, mainly of storytellers; and one file folder, which includes the reports on the field trip tapes. The tapes were recorded in the summer of 1982 in Beech Mountain, North Carolina.

Language of Materials



Tapes are arranged by storyteller, then by tape number as listed in McDermitt's field notes. The audiocassettes held by the archives were apparently copied from other audiotapes and do not correspond to McDermitt's notes on a one-to-one basis.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Barbara McDermitt donated the recordings to the Archives of Appalachia on September 28, 1982 and June 1, 1987.

Separated Materials

The dissertation, "A Comparison of a Scottish and American Storyteller and Their Marchen Repertoires," has been catalogued and added to Special Collections.

Processing Information

Marie Tedesco completed processing and the collection was opened for research in October 1987.
