Scope and Contents

The collection reflects the activities and interests of the Lee R. Herndon Chapter in ornithology and wildlife and the natural environment in general. Material in the collection includes administrative and subject files, correspondence, reports, minutes of club meetings, annual records of bird sightings, a scrapbook, newspaper clippings, miscellaneous publications, and photographic slides of birds, plants, and nature scenes.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged into three series, as follows: Series 1, Subject Files; Series 2, Ledger and Scrapbook; and Series 3, Photographic Slides.

Method of Acquisition

On October 19, 1994, Lois M. Herndon, Elizabethton, Tenn., made the original donation (a collection of her husband Lee R. Herndon’s nature slides) to the Archives of Appalachia on behalf of the local chapter of the Tennessee Ornithological Society named for him. Additional material was donated to the archives on behalf of the society on June 15, 1995 by Beth Hogan, Johnson City, Tenn.; on July 3, 1995 by Charles Moore and Martha Dillenbeck, Johnson City, Tenn.; on November 29, 1995, July 15, 1996, July 15, 2010 and April 23, 2015 by Charles Moore.

Separated Materials

The Kestrel, the newsletter of the Lee R. Herndon Chapter, Tennessee Ornithological Society, is filed in the Appalachian Publications Vertical Files and is not a part of this collection.
