Mary Winona Payne Papers
Scope and Contents
The Mary Winona Payne Papers document personal information and family historical research maintained by Payne on various family lines to which she was related, including the Payne, Bushong, Caldwell, Ernst, Erwin/Irwin, Murr, and White families. The papers include correspondence, family and genealogical records (originals and copies), newspaper clippings, financial accounts, land grants, photographs, a Murr family tree chart, and miscellaneous printed ephemera. The collection contains materials from 1817-1996 and undated items, though it includes photocopies of some materials earlier than 1817 from the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

The collection is arranged into two series as follows: Series 1, Subject Files, 1817-1996 and undated, and Series 2, Photographs and Microfiche, 1906-1994 and undated.
Method of Acquisition
The Mary Winona Payne Papers were donated to the Archives of Appalachia by Howard P. Ledbetter, Johnson City, Tenn., on Ms. Payne’s behalf on July 12, 1994. Ledbetter is a great-grandson of William S. White, in whose original possession many of the collection documents were found.
Accruals and Additions
Howard P. Ledbetter donated additional material on August 4, 1998.
Processing Information
The collection was processed by Allison Wilson and opened to research in October 2007.
