Scope and Contents

The course, "Appalachian Literature: The Adult and the Child," was offered by the English department at East Tennessee State University June 4-24, 1992. The course focused on the concept of child as seen through Appalachian literature for adults and children. The course consisted of lectures given by Roberta Herrin and Robert J. Higgs of the English department; lectures given by guest artists and scholars; and videos on topics related to the child in Appalachian literature. The collection consists of 14 audiocassettes of the lectures. Among the guest lecturers were writers Jeff Daniel Marion, George Ella Lyon, Gurney Norman, and Jim Wayne Miller.

Roberta Herrin and Robert J. Higgs of the English department at East Tennessee State University donated the Appalachian Literature: The Adult and the Child Course Collection to the archives on July 17, 1992. Archives staff completed processing of the collection in April 1999.
