William E. Ryan Collection
Scope and Contents
The William E. Ryan Collection consists of correspondence, research notes, maps, engineering manuals, photographs, and reports. The material documents Ryan's work on the Allegheny, Beaver, Mahoning, Monongahela, Ohio, Tygart, and Youghiogeny River Projects. The records also contain information on the Pike Island Locks and Dam Project, and the Maxwell Locks and Dam Project.

Arrangement
The collection is organized into four series: Series 1, Sewerage and Hydraulic Engineering Projects, 1958-1965; Series 2, Index of River and Harbor Projects, 1950-1964; Series 3, Pike Island Locks and Dam Project, 1960-1964; and Series 4, Maxwell Locks and Dam Project, 1959-1964.
Custodial History
In October of 1974 Colonel William E. Ryan gave his papers and books to the East Tennessee State University Kingsport University Center Library.
Method of Acquisition
On May 28, 1981 the East Tennessee State University Kingsport University Center Library transferred these papers to the Archives of Appalachia
Separated Materials
NON-MANUSCRIPT MATERIAL - Four photographs of the Maxwell Locks and Dam #4 have been placed in the Photographic Storage Area by accession number. Twenty nine maps and plans were removed from Design Memorandum 8, Pike Island Project. Ten plans concerning utility relocation, 18 maps and plans removed from Design Memorandum 7, and 12 plans of the pool area all dealing with the Maxwell Locks and Dam Project have been placed in the map cabinets by accession number.
OVERSIZED MATERIAL - The following items have been removed from the collection and placed in oversized storage according to accession number.
