Scope and Contents
The collection contains the narrative of Elizabeth Ellis Rinehart as recorded by her sons, James H. Rinehart and Henry Rinehart, and a typed compilation of the two accounts by Mrs. Bertha Chappell. The collection also includes a copy of a letter from Mrs. Chappell to Mrs. L. W. McCown, January 27, 1964.

The collection is open fro research.
This collection was deaccessioned June 16, 2014 because there is another copy in Mrs. McCown's papers along with her notes about the family.
The Rinehart and Ellis Families Collection was copied from the originals in the possession of Mrs. Bertha Chappell, Mountain View, California, who sent a copy to Mrs. L. W. McCown, 512 East Unaka Avenue, Johnson City, Tennessee. Mrs. McCown gave a copy to Sherrod Library, East Tennessee State University, date unknown.
Method of Acquisition
The collection was transferred to Archives of Appalachia, February 15, 1979 from Sherrod Library, East Tennessee State University.
David Goodin completed processing, and the collection was opened to research on May 30, 1979.
