Sullivan, Hawkins, Hancock Counties Central Labor Council Records

The records of the Sullivan, Hawkins, Hancock Counties Central Labor Council include incoming and outgoing correspondence of the council's officers; newsletters of local or state labor organizations; publications of the various departments within the AFL-CIO; and pamphlets, brochures and newsclippings relating to political or labor issues. Organizational documents such as the constitution, by-laws and meeting minutes are not contained in the records. The records span from 1980 through 1983, but the bulk of the material is dated 1982.

The records reflect the council's interaction with other labor organizations affiliated through the AFL-CIO and activities concerning the election and training of union officials, endorsements of political candidates, community service projects and support for striking or unemployed workers. Of special interest are materials relating to the 1982 reelection of Senator James Sasser and labor's opposition to the Republican administration of President Ronald Reagan. The records also contain information on national and international labor issues, such as the firing of the striking air traffic controllers and the plight of workers in Poland.
