Biography
Harris Wayne Leonard was born in 1932 to William Leonard and Nona Tiner Leonard. He was a graduate of Science Hill High School in 1949 at only 16 years old, and then studied math and engineering at Tennessee Tech University. Soon after receiving his degree, he went on to work at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, which later became NASA, as an aerospace research engineer at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, and became part of Project Mercury, the first program devoted to sending humans into space. He died in 2003 at the age of 70.
