Burleson, Jefferson

Jefferson Burleson was born May 12, 1840 in Yancey County, North Carolina. He married Sarah Ann Bell in Washington County, Tennessee on April 14, 1858. Burleson served in the Civil War as a Union soldier from May 31, 1863 to September 7, 1865. He was in the 8th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment (formally called the 5th East Tennessee Regiment) which was organized February 6, 1864 as a merger with the 10th East Tennessee Regiment. The 8th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment was mustered out at Knoxville, Tennessee on September 11, 1865. Burleson died in Washington County, Tennessee on June 22, 1904.

Scope and Contents The Jefferson Burleson Papers consist of a photocopy of Jefferson Burleson’s Civil War notebook. The notebook documents Burleson’s military service in the 8th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment of the Union Army up to the time of his discharge on September 7, 1865.
