Biography
Edwin Elverton White was born in Missouri in August 1891, the son of John W. and Ida S. White. White came to the Cumberland Plateau region of Tennessee in the 1920s to work in the mountain mission program of the Presbyterian Church. After 16 years of ministerial work based at Pleasant Hill, Tenn., White came to Kingsport in the fall of 1944 as minister of the Old Kingsport Presbyterian Church and Reedy Creek Presbyterian Church, two mission churches in the city. In 1949, he organized and served as the first pastor of Grace Presbyterian Church in Kingsport. White served here until his retirement in 1962. Throughout his career, White promoted religious, social, and cultural enhancement of the people and communities that he served. He wrote several works, including Highland Heritage (a mission study book), The Story of Missions (written for young people), and Missions of the Presbyterian Church.
Martha Alice Lowe White, Rev. White’s wife, was a teacher in Kingsport schools for many years. The Whites had one daughter, Dorothy.
