Biography
Kenneth E. Wilhoit was born September 29, 1913, in the Chuckey area of Greene County, Tennessee. Wilhoit attended Washington College Academy and Washington College in Tennessee. He graduated from the Standard Business Training Institute in Buffalo, New York. Upon graduation, he relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio, where Cincinnati Street Railway Company, Ohio Bus Company, Valley Bus Company, and Mt. Washington Transportation Company employed him.
In July 1935, Wilhoit returned to Tennessee where he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps until September 1938. On September 26, 1938, Wilhoit found employment with ET&WNC Transportation Company. During his forty years with the company, he held a number of positions including: Warehouseman; Rate & Bill Clerk; OS&D Clerk; Agent, Greenville, South Carolina; Agent, Charlotte, North Carolina; and Agent, Chattanooga, Tennessee. On January 1, 1946, Wilhoit was appointed Division Manager. By May 1, 1953, he was Operations Manager. Upon the death of W.W. Whisman on March 19, 1967, Wilhoit became Vice President and General Manager of ET&WNC Transportation Company. Wilhoit remained in that position until Red Ball Motor Freight Corporation assumed management of ET&WNC on December 1, 1977.
While living in South Carolina, Wilhoit met Katherine Young of Simpsonville. They were married on August 24, 1940. Their children’s names are Jane, Nancy, and Timothy.
Wilhoit was a member of the Johnson City Country Club, Chairman of the Metropolitan Kiwanis Club, and a member of the Chamber of Commerce. Wilhoit served as Trustee of Washington College Academy. Wilhoit was on the Board of Directors of the American Trucking Association and the Tennessee Motor Transport Association. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church, serving as Chairman of the Board of Stewards. Wilhoit also served on the Board of Directors for Hamilton Bank.
After forty years of service to ET&WNC, Wilhoit retired. Upon retirement, he ran a transportation consulting business. He also remained active in the many organizations in which he had been affiliated.
