Spina, Mary Beth

Mary Beth Spina was the granddaughter of Frederick T. and Elizabeth Lee McCary White of Fall Branch, Tenn. The collection consists of family papers primarily belonging to her mother’s family and preserved by her. Frederick T. White was a native of Fall Branch and a veteran of the Spanish-American War. He married Elizabeth Lee McCary, also a Fall Branch native, and they had two daughters: Mary Elsie White and Freddie Lee White Spina.

Mary Elsie White, Spina’s aunt, graduated from East Tennessee State College and became a teacher in Johnson City. She became a pioneer leader of the Girl Scout program in the city as well and was active in it for 44 years. In 1934, she became executive director of the Johnson City Girl Scout Council, where she helped develop Camp Wildwood. In 1954, she helped charter the Appalachian Girl Scout Council, the first regional Girl Scout council in the United States, and then served for many years as its’ executive director. Miss White retired in 1973 due to ill health.
