Atwater, H. Cowles (Horace Cowles), 1819-1879
Biography
Horace Cowles Atwater was born on March 14, 1819 in Homer, New York. He graduated from Yale College in 1842 and from the Yale Divinity School in 1845. At that time, he began to serve as a Methodist minister in New England from 1845 to 1857. He served Congregational churches in Wisconsin and Ohio from 1859 to 1867. Prior to coming to Tennessee in 1870, he served as pastor of the Reems Creek Presbyterian Church near Weaverville, North Carolina for about eighteen months. On September 9, 1870, he was received by the Holston Presbytery and served from 1870 until 1877 as pastor at the First Presbyterian Church of Elizabethton, Tenn. He died in Elizabethton on February 7, 1879.
