Biography

A native of Greene County, Tenn., Cecile Rose Cox Quillen was born on February 28, 1916, the daughter of Emory M. Cox, Jr., and Linnie Lee Spears Cox. She worked at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and later at the Eastman Chemical Company, where she worked when she met her future husband, James H. Quillen. They married on August 9, 1952. She was a dedicated companion in her husband’s long and illustrious political career, beginning with first encouraging him to enter politics as a member of the Tennessee General Assembly in the 1950s and early 1960s and later during his long tenure as congressman from the First Congressional District of Tennessee from 1963 until his retirement in 1997.
