Biography

A native of Carter County, Tenn., Margaret Hyder DeVault was born on January 13, 1910. She was the daughter of Dr. Romulus Bennick Hyder and Annie Gourley Hyder. She graduated from East Tennessee State College (now University) and had a career as a schoolteacher in the Washington County, Tenn., school system. She married Weldon DeVault on January 20, 1935. Mrs. DeVault died on April 6, 1990.

Mrs. DeVault was a member of a prominent Carter County family. Her grandfather, Dr. Nat E. Hyder (1849-1904), was an early physician, teacher, surveyor, and chairman of the Carter County Court. He served with the 13th Volunteer Tennessee Calvary during the Civil War. He was a descendant of Michael Hyder, Sr., one of the original founders and militiamen of the Watauga settlement in frontier Tennessee. (For more on Nat Hyder, see the Nat E.
