Ellis, James Tipton, 1845-1924

James Tipton Ellis, known by Tipton, was the son of Radford Ellis and Louisa Lowery. He was born in 1845 in Carter County, Tennessee. He inherited the Radford Ellis home place and served as a justice of the peace in the county. He married Harriet Jobe and had six children, Erma, James, Louisa, Radford J., Eliza, and Robert T. Ellis. Tipton Ellis died in 1924.

Scope and Contents The James Tipton Ellis Journal consists of a photocopy of the original journal used by Ellis for keeping personal and business accounts. Journal entries include information on Carter County, Tennessee marriages (some of which he performed as a justice of the peace) and deaths, as well as for purchases of goods.
