Biography

Clifford A. Maxwell was born in Bristol, Tennessee on June 24, 1906, the son of Arthur Clifford and Bessie Ball Maxwell. As a youngster, he moved with his family to Johnson City, where he attended public school and East Tennessee State Teachers College. In the 1920s Maxwell journeyed to New York, where he found work writing humor for a number of magazines. During the 1930s he returned to Johnson City to begin a photographic career which, except for time spent in the United States Navy during World War II, lasted until 1986.

Maxwell married Ruth Barker in 1950. They had one son, James, who as of this writing resides in Johnson City. Maxwell was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Johnson City, as well as in a number of community organizations, among them the Johnson City/Washington County area Chamber of Commerce, the Watauga Valley Art League, and the Tipton-Haynes Historical Association. He also was a member of both the Tennessee Professional Photographers Association and the Professional Photographers of America.
