Biography
Daniel Thomas McCoy was born on December 13, 1890 in Arlington, Nebraska. His mother, Melina Berry McCoy, left Nebraska and returned to Washington County, Virginia with infants Daniel Thomas and Eliza Jane sometime in the early 1890s. Daniel Thomas McCoy married Sara Carolina Rebecca Minton of Russell County, Virginia in Abingdon on July 21, 1915. The couple had seven children: Maxine Elizabeth, Daniel Thomas, Jr., Sara Cathryn, William Lawrence, Vera Rose, Carroll Minton, and Mary Lois.
McCoy went to work in 1906 at age 16 as a railroad apprentice on the Virginia and Southwestern Railway in Saint Charles, Virginia. He stayed with the Virginia and Southwestern until 1916 when he went to work for the Southern Railway in Church Hill, Tennessee. After the outbreak of World War I, McCoy was asked to accept the agent's position in Keokee, Virginia. McCoy returned to Church Hill in 1920 and remained there until 1934, when he became an agent in Gate City, Virginia. He moved to Kingsport, Tennessee in 1941 but then moved to Weber City, Virginia in 1947. After retiring in 1958, McCoy returned to Kingsport, where he died on July 29, 1966.
