Campbell, Jesse Larrimore

Jesse Larrimore "Larry" Campbell was born on October 9, 1915 in White County, Tennessee, the son of James Lane Campbell and Lillie Jane Green. The family moved to Kentucky when he was two years old, but returned to Tennessee after James was killed in a mining accident in 1929.

Campbell served in the United States military during World War II and the Korean War. He worked for the United States Postal Service for most of his working life and was appointed Postmaster of Manchester, Tennessee in 1968.

He married Lucie Maie Lovell on December 25, 1937; she died in 1948. Campbell married Leona Ramsey in May 1949. They had two daughters, Susan and Lori. Larry Campbell died on January 19, 1997.

Scope and Contents The Jesse Larrimore Campbell Papers consist primarily of two compact discs made from a 1985 recording of Campbell recalling his life. Supplementary material includes a family genealogy, photocopies of clippings and photographs, and documents about the family by Campbell's daughter and granddaughter. Campbell grew up in a mining town in Kentucky and in the recording discusses his playmates and other aspects of life in a coal town. He mentions that his mother was a musician and...
