Biography

Emmett M. Essin, III, was born in Sherman, Texas, in 1940. A 1964 graduate of Austin College, Sherman, Texas, he earned advanced degrees at Texas Christian University (M.A., 1965; Ph.D., 1968). Since 1967, he has served as professor of history at East Tennessee State University, and in 1985 he became director of the university's division of developmental studies.

Essin's 'Shavetails and Bell Sharps: The History of the U.S. Army Mule' was published in 1997 by the University of Nebraska Press.

The Emmett Essin Papers consist of drafts of his Shavetails and Bell Sharps: The History of the U.S. Army Mule, published in 1997 by the University of Nebraska Press. Included in the collection are an uncorrected typescript draft of the manuscript, a corrected typescript draft, a photocopy of the typescript draft (with editor's corrections), and galley proofs.
