Biography
Sidney Gordon Gilbreath, first president of East Tennessee State Normal School (ETSNS), was born on April 13, 1869 at Hiwassee College, Madisonville, Monroe County, Tennessee. He was the son of James Asbury and Elizabeth Brunner Gilbreath. After attending area public schools, Gilbreath began his career in education even before graduating from college. In either 1886 or 1888, he taught at New Hope public school. Subsequently, he taught at Gaines School, again at New Hope, and then assumed the position of co-principal at Morgantown Academy.
