Austin, Richard Cartwright, 1934-
Richard Cartwright Austin was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1934. He graduated from Swarthmore College in 1956 and went on to earn a Master of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary in 1959. He served as a Presbyterian pastor in Pennsylvania coal country and Washington, DC before being called to serve as director of the West Virginia Mountain Project, an Appalachian mission. He attended the San Francisco Theological Seminary and completed his dissertation Coal Valley Organizing under the direction of Myles Horton. He earned his Doctor of Science in Theology in 1975.
