Biography

Ernest Van Stoneman was the eldest son of Elisha Stoneman (1849-1934) and second wife, Rebecca Bowers (1868-1896). Ernest was born May 25, 1893. He had two brothers: Ingram Boyd Stoneman (1894-1973) and Palmer Stoneman (1896-1916). He married Hattie Frost on November 10, 1918. Together, they had fifteen surviving children. Ernest began his musical career with an Okeh recording in 1925. He was known to have also recorded under the following names: David Hunt, Jim Seany, Slim Harris, Jim Whalen, John Clark, Justin Winfield, Sim Harris, Uncle Ben Hawkins, and Uncle Jim Seaney.
