Arnow, Pat

 Person

Biography

Pat Arnow is a writer, playwright, editor, and former member of the Center for Appalachian Studies and Services at ETSU. While working at the university, Arnow became interested in the life of Christine Burleson (1899-1967), ETSU professor of English, especially as to why such a well-educated and highly respected woman would have committed suicide. This led her and husband Dr. Steven Giles, a psychologist with the Veterans Administration medical facility in Johnson City, to investigate via what Giles called a "psychological autopsy." Arnow eventually used the material collected in this research to write a play based on Burleson's life titled "Cancell'd Destiny," which was produced in 1990.
