Biographical Note
Roy S. Nicks, ETSU's seventh president, took office on May 4, 1992, as interim president. On June 25, 1993, this appointment was made permanent. A native of Marshall County, Tenn., born June 30, 1933, Nicks obtained his bachelor's degree from Middle Tennessee State University, his master's degree from the University of Tennessee, and an Ed.D. from Memphis State University. In addition to teaching in Tennessee higher education, Nicks served as an assistant to Governor Frank Clement, a deputy commissioner of Tennessee's Department of Finance and Administration, Commissioner of the Department of Public Welfare, and Chancellor of the University of Tennessee at Nashville. From 1975-1986, he headed the Tennessee Board of Regents system as chancellor. Dr. Nicks retired as president of ETSU on December 31, 1996.
