Biographical Note
Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Matthews was born in Nashville in 1917, the daughter of Nena Painter and Dr. William A Matthews. In 1936, her aunt and uncle, Thad and Pearle Cox adopted her. She graduated from the George Peabody College for Teachers at Nashville in 1939. In 1944, Betty Matthews married Captain Richard Griffin Adams. Betty and Griffin Adams had three children: Dabney Adams Mayfield, Gail Adams Winn, and Griffin Adams, Jr.
