Biographical Note

Pearl Painter was born January 25, 1876 at Painter Creek, Tennessee, part of a family that included six sisters and one brother who lived past childhood. She married Thad Cox in December 1898. Mrs. Cox was very involved in the design and furnishing of their Johnson City house and grounds (“The Oaks”) and purchased many specialty items from importers in New York City. She also helped with the landscape design, personally did much of the gardening, and for a time ran The Oaks Nursery. Thad and Pearle Cox had no children of their own, but in 1936 they formally adopted their niece, Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Matthews, a daughter of Mrs. Cox’s sister, Nenah Painter Matthews and Dr. William A. Matthews.
