The Junior Order of United American Mechanics was founded in 1853 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The organization promoted national allegiance, solidarity, and aid for its members. The Order also maintained a Beneficiary Degree, which provided members with compensation for illness or injury, as well as life insurance. The Shell Creek Council was founded circa 1909, and met in Carter County, Tennessee.
