Biography

The Miss Buccaneer Pageant was first held in 1964 and sponsored by the East Tennessee State University Buccaneer yearbook staff (later the ETSU Student Publications office) as an alternative to the traditional class beauty contests. Schery Jeanne Lodter of Johnson City was the first Miss Bucanneer. In 1986, the contest was rechristened the Miss Buccaneer Scholarship Pageant with the addition of a scholarship program. The pageant was last held in 1990 with Benita Patricia Bellamy crowned Miss Buccaneer, the first African-American to hold the title. A list of the pageant winners is found in Box 2, folder 12.

The Miss Buccaneer Pageant Records consist of correspondence, newsclippings, applications, score sheets, receipts, event programs, and photographs primarily documenting pageant activities for the years 1984-88 and 1990. Information to be found in the collection include how contestants were scored, pageant publicity, and biographical information about contestants.
