The Kenneth M. Murray Photographs collection includes 8x10 black & white prints, original negatives and contact sheets, and photo discs of scanned images. Murray's work primarily focuses on Appalachian culture, landscape, and people, but also covers global locations, traditions, and faces. Each series includes images from Murray's books A Portrait of Appalachia, Down to Earth: People of Appalachia, A Day Before Yesterday, and Highland Trails as well as other images.

The collection is divided into 3 series: Prints, Photo Discs, and Negatives and Contact Sheets. Series 1 and 2 are arranged alphabetically by subject. Series 3 lists items in chronological order. Subject headings were determined by content.
