Pat Arnow Collection

The collection documents Arnow's research of the life of Christine Burleson and the writing of the play "Cancell'd Destiny" based on that life as well as other research interests of Arnow's, primarily research work on the topic of Appalachians and war. The collection includes photocopies of correspondence between Burleson and Pulitzer-Prize winning author Thomas S. Stribling (1881-1965), which reveals a romantic relationship that existed between the two in the 1920s; research notes, writings by Burleson and Stribling, and articles about them; recordings and transcripts of oral history interviews conducted by Arnow with individuals who had known Burleson; drafts and a final version of the play. Also included in the collection are newspaper clippings and articles related to political activism in Appalachia, particularly as regards war and the women's movement and scrapbooks of the Huntington, W. Va. Chapter of the National Organization for Women.

Conditions Governing Access
Duplication of recordings require permission of donor. Duplication of Burleson/Stribling letters require permission of Milligan College or the Tennessee State Library and Archives, repositories holding the originals. Publication of papers require permission of donor.
The collection is arranged into two series, as follows: Series I, General Research Files, 1981-1995 and undated, Box 1 and Series II, "Cancell'd Destiny" files, 1921-2009 and undated, Boxes 2-5
