The Thomas Sneed Papers include interviews, field recordings, live recordings, photographs, articles, and news clippings of musicians from Carter, Johnson, Washington, and Unicoi counties in Tennessee. Sneed collected these materials during his time at East Tennessee State University. Most notable of the interviews are those of Ralph Blizzard, Clint Howard, and Wade Mainer. Most of the interviews in the collection are focused primarily on traditional music in Appalachia and how it relates to the local region. The collection also contains live recordings of Mike Seeger, Reeltime Travelers, Engine 143, and Gillian Welch.

The collection is divided into five series: Series 1 - Papers, Series 2 - Photographs, Series 3 - Sound Recordings, Series 4 - Video, and Series 5 - Miscellaneous. The interviews, recordings, and related materials are arranged alphabetically by last name and chronologically by date.
