The W. Hanes Lancaster, Jr. Collection consists of a bound typescript of Lancaster's World War II memoirs related to his military service titled, "A Military Adventure, 1943-1944-1945 for My Four Daughters," Lancaster completed the writing of his wartime reminiscence in 1997. The memoir describes Lancaster's experiences as a gunner aboards B-29 bombers in the Asian and Pacific theatres during World War II, including bombing missions into China and Japan.

The collection was donated to the Archives of Appalachia by W. Hanes Lancaster, Jr., of Johnson City, Tennessee on April 29, 1999, accession number 1999-033.
The collection was processed by Ned Irwin and opened for research in April 2007.
