Walter Crockett began his communication's career as a sports reporter with the Bristol Herald-Courier in 1923. A resident of Bristol, Virginia, he received his education at Bristol Virginia High School, King College, and Pyle Business College. He was married to Margaret Kilgore. They had one daughter, Peggy (Mrs. Don) MacPherson.

Crockett began his career with WCYB radio station in 1952 as the public affairs director and began work with WCYB-TV when it went on the air in 1956. He served as an editorialist for the television station until his retirement in 1979 and continued to do guest editorials until his death on September 13, 1981 at the age of 75. Walter Crockett was also an active civic, church and community leader.
