Bernard H. Cantor was born in Syracuse, New York on April 13, 1920 and grew up in Johnson City, Tennessee, graduating from Science Hill High School in 1937. He received a B.A. in philosophy, psychology, and history from the University of Tennessee in 1941 and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Harvard Law School in 1943. From October 1943 to February 1945, he served as law clerk to the Honorable Harold M. Stephens, Associate Justice, United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. Mr. Cantor, then, worked for the Office of Scientific Research and Development as an attorney of its Legal Division. In February 1946, he returned to Johnson City and began a private law practice.

Arrangement The papers of this collection are arranged in chronological order by record type beginning with the decisions of Mr. Cantor as an arbitrator, 1959-1978 as Series 1, and then the Arbitration Review Board Decisions between the United Mine Workers and the Bituminous Coal Operators' Association, 1975-1978 as Series 2. Series 3 includes several labor contracts of relevance to the arbitration layout decided by Mr. Cantor.

Scope and Contents The B'nai Sholom Congregation Records consists of administrative records; correspondence; financial records; and publications of the congregation and its auxiliaries. The collection is comprised of material dating from 1905-1983, but the bulk of the material falls between 1945 and 1965.
