Dowdy, James T., Sr.

James T. Dowdy, Sr. was born on March 19, 1914 in Roanoke, Virginia. In 1926, he moved with his family to Johnson City, Tennessee. After finishing his high school education, Dowdy went to work for a printing office in Johnson City in 1932, and for East Tennessee and Western North Carolina (ET&WNC) Transportation Company in 1938. In 1940, he began his 35 year career as a railroad brakeman by accepting a job with the Carolina, Clinchfield and Ohio Railway. Subsequently, he worked for the Santa Fe Railroad (1942-59) and for the ET&WNC Railroad (1959-1975). He retired on August 28, 1974. As of this writing, Dowdy resides at 138 East Highland Road, Johnson City, Tennessee.

Scope and Contents Throughout his career, Dowdy collected photographs related to various, regional railroads. Some of the collection's photographs were taken by Dowdy, while others were obtained through trade with fellow collectors. Railroads included are: Carolina, Clinchfield, and Ohio Railroad (CC&O); Cass Scenic Railroad; East Tennessee & Western North Carolina (ET&WNC); Linville River Railway (LRR)*; and Southern Railway Company.
