John Wesley Garland (September 5, 1807-August 5, 1887) was the second of six children born to David and Sarah Garland while residents of East Tennessee. As a Tennessee native living in northwestern North Carolina between c. 1820 and c. 1860, John W. Garland became a prominent landowner and businessman; by the time the 1860 census was taken his personal property was valued at $16,700. Garland also served as a court clerk for Yancey County, North Carolina during the 1850s. Sometime during the 1860s John Garland and his wife moved to Washington County, Tennessee (which at that time included Unicoi County, Tennessee) and by March 25, 1876 his wife (believed to be Jane M. Horton-Garland) had died. John Wesley Garland died 11 years later and was buried in the Jobe Cemetery at Erwin, Tennessee.
