East Tennessee State University. Women’s Studies Steering Committee
The effort to develop a women’s studies curriculum based around a minor concentration began in the early 1990s, following a gender inequities study at ETSU that revealed sex biases in the university’s curriculum, hiring practices, and salary scales. The steering committee was established in 1991 to formulate a women’s studies program that would combine courses dealing with women’s issues in philosophy, sociology, social work, nursing, and English for a degree minor. These efforts reached fruition with the establishment of the women’s studies minor with the fall semester of 1993.
