The Professional Staff Association was originally organized at ETSU in 1958 as Girl's Friday. Patsy Pickel and Carolyn Swartz were two of the founders. Its purpose was to serve as a social organization for campus secretaries, clerks, and other non-faculty female staff members of the university. As the membership came to include males as well as females, the name was eventually changed to the Professional Staff Association. The association continues to promote social activities and job benefits for the university's non-teaching staff.
