East Tennessee State Normal School. Sapphonian Literary Society
The Sapphonian Literary Society, a literary society for female students of the East Tennessee State Normal School (now East Tennessee State University), was established by the adoption of a constitution on November 15, 1911. The society was organized to promote the students' literary attainments and to encourage the social welfare of the students and the normal school. The society continued to meet at least until January 1927.

Scope and Contents The Sapphonian Literary Society Records consist of one bound minute book which contains the constitution adopted on November 15, 1911; bylaws; a revised constitution and bylaws adopted on October 11, 1920; membership lists; and minutes (incomplete) of meetings from September 23, 1915 through January 15, 1927.
