Scope and Contents: The Edward G. DeVault Family Papers consists of a physician's notebook of W. B. DeVault (1881 and undated) and a Washington County, Tenn., Justice of the Peace ledger (1850-53) for Civil District 16 (Leesburg) kept by Samuel Conley, J. P. The physician's notebook describes medical and surgical procedures and identifies many different types of drugs and compounds used in 19th century medical practice. The justice of the peace ledger contains names of plaintiffs and defendants in civil and criminal cases heard before the justice and the final rulings of each case.
