Martha Marshall taught history at Tennessee High School in Bristol. She also served as an instructor for East Tennessee State University’s adult education program and in the Vaten School of Arts and Crafts. She participated in a number of historic, educational, and civic groups. She served as a co-historian of the state Delta Kappa Gamma Society and as president of the Sullivan County Historical Society. Miss Marshall was also the author of several books, including Saga of the Vikings of THS, Many Patches Ago, Voices from the Chapel, and Glimpses from the Hills. Miss Marshall was also an avid quilter whose quilts were presented in a number of exhibits. Martha Marshall died on July 19, 2006 at the age of 83.
Martha Marshall served on the Historic Sites and Museums Committee for the Washington County, Tennessee Bicentennial Commission. The commission was formed to oversee the yearlong celebration of Tennessee statehood in Washington County. The celebration included tours of Washington, Carter, and Greene counties, exhibits at local historic sites and museums. Included as part of the celebration was “A Blast from the Past,” sponsored by the Johnson City Parks and Recreation Department. The program offered many activities celebrating the Tennessee Bicentennial, including arts and crafts, nature programs, and various Tennessee history programs. Other events included “200 Years of Quilting” by Martha Marshall at the Historic Jonesborough Visitors Center, concerts by the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra, and the Bicentennial Parade.
