Show Forms of Material (links to similar genres)Scope and Contents: The collection consists of 7000 black and white 4" x 5" negatives taken by James Ellis while he was chief photographer for the Johnson City Press-Chronicle. These negatives date from only two years of his service as Press-Chronicle photographer, 1958-60. A few of the negatives were identified as having been taken by a photographer named Huffine. These are as follows: 20573, 20580, 20581, 21229-21230, 21573-75, and 21634.
Unfortunately, the negatives were not identified by Ellis, so that the researcher must use personal discretion to ascertain their meaning and context. Since the negatives were numbered, it is likely that Ellis logged descriptions, and perhaps someday these descriptions will come into the possession of the Archives of Appalachia.
The negatives are primarily of local interest, with East Tennessee civic clubs, high schools, and college and university athletic teams being well represented. Subjects covered include such events as automobile accidents; court proceedings and political activities; social events; sports activities; parades; and the Johnson City Preaching Mission. Ellis also photographed buildings and took group and individual portraits.
